Elizabeth R. Skidmore, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, is the only occupational therapist to receive the U.S. President (Obama) Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, an award given only once during a President’s term of office. Skidmore’s research examined how to optimize strategy training interventions to promote client engagement in the therapy process and how cognition, mood, and occupational participation influence each other to elucidate underlying mechanisms of how occupational therapy interventions work to facilitate functional recovery. Skidmore’s research recognizes the salience of occupational therapy research to the public health agenda of America, shows occupational therapy as a sciencedriven profession, and informs practitioners about how to devise personalized interventions to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.
